Account Payment
A direct payment made to a third party from your account at your request. Account payments can be initiated through most FNB channels. These are also known as EFT or Third Party Payments.
Balance Enquiry
A request for the actual and available balances on your account(s) through one of our channels. Balance enquiries are free through all of our electronic channels, but are charged for in branches and operator assisted telephone banking, as well as at other banks’ ATMs and merchants’ Point of Sale devices.
Bank Cheque
You can request FNB to draw (issue) a cheque on your behalf to pay a third party. The value of the cheque will be debited to your account immediately and the third party benefits from the certainty that the cheque will be paid, as it is drawn on (paid by) FNB directly.
Card Replacement Fee
A fee charged when for the replacement of a card. This fee is not charged where the card is being replaced because of wear, damage or if retained by an ATM.
Cash Withdrawal
When you draw cash from your account through an ATM or Mini ATM, at a Branch, or at the cashier in a participating merchant (e.g. a grocery store).
Cash Deposit
The depositing of cash into your account.
Cellphone Banking
FNB offers customers the convenience of banking via any mobile phone on any network in South Africa. What’s more, cellphone banking is absolutely free to personal account customers. With cellphone banking, you can use your mobile phone to check your balance, obtain a mini statement, make account payments and linked account transfers, as well as to make prepaid purchases.
Channel
A banking channel is a way in which you can interact with your bank. Some of the channels currently offered by FNB are: Branches, ATMs, Mini-ATMs, Telephone Banking, Internet Banking and Cellphone Banking.

The depositing of a cheque into your account.
Cheque Payment
A payment made from your account by writing out a cheque.
Consultant Assisted Telephone Banking
A telephone-based service whereby you instruct a helpful consultant to perform your banking transactions on your behalf.
Debit Order
A Debit Order is an automatic payment from your account to a third party. For a debit order to occur you will have had to give authority to the third party (for example an insurance company) to debit your account with a specific amount on a specific date, or every month.

Debit Order – Internal
A Debit order payment to FNB Card, FNB HomeLoans, Wesbank, FNB Loans or FNB Funeral Cover.
Declined Transaction Fee
If, for example, you attempt to withdraw funds from an ATM or make a point-of-sale or petrol card purchase, and the transaction is declined because you do not have enough money available in your account (insufficient funds) or because you have exceeded your daily withdrawal or purchase limit, then a fee may be charged. The fee varies depending on whether the transaction was attempted in a store at the Point of Sale or at an FNB ATM or at another bank’s ATM.
Deposit
The act of crediting (putting money into) your account, thereby increasing the available balance.
Dishonoured Payment
If a cheque or debit order is presented against your account, and there is not enough money to perform the transaction, the bank may reject the item as unpaid, and will notify the payee (intended recipient of the funds) that the item was unpaid and that they should refer to drawer (the issuer of the cheque/debit order/ payment instruction).
Encore Cheque Account
This account provides the senior's market with a variety of comprehensive banking options to choose from. What's more, if you keep a minimum of R6 000 in your Encore Cheque Account, or have an investment of R10 000 with FNB, you get 35 free qualifying transactions.
Fluid Account
If you are between the ages of 13 and 18 years and are a South African resident, then the Fluid Account gives you access to your money whenever you need it. There is no minimum opening deposit or monthly management fee.
Future Account
This is a savings account exclusively for our clients under 13 years. Withdraw/deposit at any FNB branch or ATM and make purchases at shops, restaurants, etc. using a debit card.
FNB ATM
An FNB-branded Automatic Teller Machine.
FNB Mini ATM
An FNB-branded miniature Automatic Teller Machine (mini ATM) is a device about the size of a loaf of bread, usually located in a store. To draw cash from your account, you swipe your card and enter your PIN, enter the amount of cash you require, then the Mini ATM prints a slip (with the details of the required withdrawal), which you give to the cashier, who will take the slip and give you cash from the till in the shop.
FNB Branch
Any of the more than 650 physical branches of FNB in South Africa.
Honouring Fee
In certain cases, where a cheque or debit order is presented against your account and there are insufficient funds (not enough money) to perform the transaction, FNB may, at our discretion, still choose to pay the transaction on your behalf, based on your financial history with us. The Honouring Fee may be charged for this service.
inContact
FNB’s innovative and free transactional notification service keeps you in contact with your transactions and account balance via sms and/or email.
Internet Banking
An internet-based banking service (“FNB Online”) whereby you perform your banking transactions via the secure FNB internet banking website.
IVR Telephone Banking
A telephone-based banking service whereby you call in to our Interactive Voice Response (IVR) or speech activated service, and by listening to the prompts and by using your telephone keypad or voice, you are able to check your balance and make account payments and linked account transfers.
Life Start Account
The Life Start account gives students 24-hour access to their cash. You get a full range of banking products and many free benefits, including an email address, career assessment, online interviews and a dedicated student information and query line.
Linked Account Transfer
A transfer of funds made between the accounts that you can access directly through your banking profile. For example, you may have several accounts with FNB (e.g. a cheque account a credit card and a home loan), and transfers between these accounts would be Linked Account Transfers. Linked Account Transfers can be initiated through most of the channels offered by FNB.
MasterCard Debit Card
A PIN-based card linked to your account that allows you to draw cash (e.g. at an ATM) or pay for goods at a merchant (e.g. a grocery store). Available on selected youth accounts.
Mini Statement
A statement showing only the last few transactions on an account.
Monthly Account Fee
A Monthly fee charged to an account.
Mzansi Account
This is a simple bank account for people with uncomplicated savings and transmission needs. Bank charges are reduced and ATM transaction fees are the same across all banks’ ATMs.
Other Bank’s ATM
An automatic teller machine that is not FNB branded. These ATMs could be owned by another bank, or by an independent service provider.
Personal Cheque Account
Our Personal Cheque Accounts enable access to your money 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via Visa Cheque Cards for in-store purchases and ATM transactions as well as access via the Internet, telephone you’re your cellphone. What's more, our free inContact service notifies you via SMS or email to financial transactions as they occur and you’ll earn eBucks on all qualifying transactions.
Petrol Card Purchase
A purchase of fuel, made at a fuel retailer, using a Petrol Card linked to your cheque account.
Point of Sale Purchase – Debit Card
A purchase made at a merchant (e.g. a grocery store) using your Visa Electron or MasterCard branded debit card.
Point of Sale Purchase – Visa Cheque Card
A purchase made at a merchant (e.g. a grocery store) using your Visa branded cheque card.
Point of Sale Withdrawal
You can request to draw cash from your account while making a purchase with your FNB Visa-Electron or MasterCard debit card at a participating store (e.g. a grocery store). The value of the cash withdrawn, along with the value of your card purchase will be debited to your account.
Post Dated Cheque Deposit
A cheque that is deposited on a date prior to the date written on the cheque is referred to as a post dated cheque deposit. Post dated cheque deposits are not allowed in South Africa, and these deposits are required to be reversed out on discovery. A fee is charged to cover the processing of the post dated cheque deposit.
Prepaid Purchase
The purchase of a prepaid service (e.g. telephone airtime or electricity) through the bank (e.g. at an ATM).
Provisional Statement
An interim statement of your account, for example a statement printed during your normal statement cycle, but prior to the end of the cycle.
Scheduled Payment
An automatic payment from your account to a third party, made according to an instruction that you have given to your bank. Scheduled Payments are also known as Stop Orders, can be set up at a bank branch or via FNB Online and are a safe and convenient way to make regular monthly payments (e.g. to pay your rent).
Scheduled Transfers
An automatic payment between your linked accounts, made according to an instruction that you have given to your bank. Scheduled Transfers can be set up at a Branch or via FNB Online, and are a safe and convenient way to make regular monthly transfers between your accounts.
Smart Account
Make deposits, withdrawals, transfers and pay bills at ATMs, over the Internet or by phone, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can also use your VISA Electron debit card to make purchases at most shops, so you don't have to carry cash.
Special Clearance of a cheque
Typically, a deposited cheque will take 7 working days before it is cleared and you are able to use the money, however if you request a ‘special clearance’ at the time of making the deposit, then for a fee, the bank will speed-up the processing of the cheque, and clearance can be obtained in 2 working days.
Statement
A statement is a listing of the transactions that have been processed through an account over a specified period.
Stop Order
An automatic payment from your account to a third party, made according to an instruction that you have given to your bank. Stop Payment
A Stop Payment is an instruction by you to us, not to pay a specific cheque or debit order when presented against your account.
Subscription Fee
Some banks charge a fee for access to certain of their channels, such as internet or telephone banking. However access to all of these channels is free at FNB.
Visa Cheque Card
A signature-based card linked to your cheque account that allows you to draw cash (e.g. at an ATM) or pay for goods at a merchant (e.g. a grocery store).
Visa Electron Debit Card
A PIN-based card linked to your account that allows you to draw cash (e.g. at an ATM) or pay for goods at a merchant (e.g. a grocery store).
